On Volume 16 of the Mars Hill Tapes, Philip Cushman talked about his book Constructing the Self, Constructing America: A Cultural History of Psychotherapy (Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 1995). Cushman argues that in the nineteenth century, “The search for transcendence was in the process of being removed from the communal realm and relocated within the individual.” This had a profound effect on the American sense of the self.
