One of the guests on volume 137 of the Journal is James Nolan, the author of What They Saw in America: Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, G. K. Chesterton, and Sayyid Qutb. Nolan’s book assembles and compares views of America offered by four prominent visitors: a French aristocrat, a German sociologist, an English journalist/theologian, and an Egyptian poet and literary critic. In his study of their comments, he found many similarities in the perception of America in these four very different observers. This Friday Feature includes an excerpt from the Volume 137 interview.
