In a series of learned books, historian Francis Oakley has demonstrated how — for all of recorded history — the predominant form of political rule was kingship. Furthermore, kingship was seen as an expression of the divine, of the supernatural, cosmic order that informed all of life. Kingship was anchored in the cosmos. In this interview from Volume 133 of the Journal, Oakley describes how the modern idea of “secular” politics is a striking departure in human history. Also heard is a brief excerpt of a interview with Oliver O’Donovan in which he explains his claim that “the Kingdom of God is a real kingdom.”
