Belden Lane — now Professor Emeritus of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University — has long done theology out-of-doors. His books include The Solace of Fierce Landscapes: Exploring Desert and Mountain Spirituality; Backpacking with the Saints: Wilderness Hiking as Spiritual Practice; The Great Conversation: Nature and the Care of the Soul; and Ravished by Beauty: The Surprising Legacy of Reformed Spirituality. In 2002 — for Volume 56 of the Journal — he talked with Ken Myers about an earlier book, titled Landscapes of the Sacred: Geography and Narrative in American Spirituality. Today’s Feature presents a longer “director’s cut” of that interview.
