One of the guests on Volume 151 of the Journal is Scott Newstok, author of How to Think Like Shakespeare: Lessons from a Renaissance Education. In the book’s introductory chapter, Newstok writes: “As both a teacher and a parent of school-age children, I’ve become dismayed by the way we think about thinking. While dismay first animated my writing, I’m hopeful that Shakespearean habits of mind can help us hold a mirror up to current dogma.” His book bears a rich and evocative witness to a better way of understanding what thinking is. In this Friday Feature, Newstok describes how many efforts at educational reform have become obstacles to thinking well.
