In a 2016 lecture given in London, poet and theologian Malcolm Guite explains Owen Barfield’s idea of the development of consciousness over time, an evolution made evident through language that reveals an earlier, pre-modern way of seeing the world. In recovering this earlier mode of perception — a recovery greatly aided by poetry — we have access to forgotten angles of vision that enable us to understand reality with greater clarity. Our Friday Feature presentation of this lecture was made possible by the generous permission of the Temenos Academy, which sponsored the lecture.
