In a 2023 lecture, Michael Hanby addresses a confusion at the heart of our current cultural crisis: a conflation of the concepts of authority and power. A misunderstanding of the nature of true authority is an essential characteristic of the modern world, and it is leading us rapidly toward societal collapse. Hanby points out signs of this collapse everywhere, but argues that it is especially pernicious in the realms of science and technology and the political liberal order. The result is that we are, as a society, losing our collective grip on the reality of our common world. Hanby argues that a metaphysical — and ultimately theological — understanding of true authority is essential to our recovery and flourishing.
