In the week before Christmas, the daily liturgy in some churches includes the text of the traditional O Antiphons. These texts were originally intended to be chanted before and after the singing of the Magnificat on the evenings before Christmas. Each text addresses Christ directly using Messianic imagery from the Old Testament. Attributes of Christ and his work were summarized in seven Messianic names: Wisdom, Adonai (a Hebrew name for God that means “Lord”), Root of Jesse, Key of David, Morning Star, King of the Nations, and Emmanuel (Hebrew for “God with us”). Many composers have set the text of individual antiphons to music for liturgical use. In this week’s Friday Feature, Ken Myers introduces listeners to four composers who each have set all seven of the O Antiphons to music. These composers are Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Arvo Pärt, Paweł Łukaszewski, and Bob Chilcott. (Visit this page on Ken’s Cantica Sacra website to listen to a recording of Pärt’s “O Antiphons.”)
