In this interview from Volume 7 of the Mars Hill Tapes, Ken Myers talks with Jane Metcalfe, the founder of WIRED Magazine, about technology and community. Metcalfe explains the dynamic visual style of the magazine that is meant to simulate the vibrancy and speed at which new information comes at people in the digital age. WIRED exists to document and energize the changes happening in cyberspace, and Metcalfe is enthusiastic about what those changes could mean for human connection. She lists the advantages of being able to connect globally with like-minded others, but is hard-pressed to admit to any potential negative effects to human relationships. Ken plays devil’s advocate, raising questions about motivation to invest in local relationships where difference exists, rather than online where others are “just like me.”
