A New Polity Partner Feature

released 8/19/2024

At the 2021 New Polity conference in Steubenville, Ohio, political philosopher Andrew Willard Jones laid out a robust vision for a just society in which virtues are formed in an analogical manner through relational obedience and trust. Jones pulls from Aquinas and Aristotle to argue that the father-son relationship is archtypical and foundational for the stability of a political order based on a just hierarchy of roles and relationships. He contrasts this vision with that of Hobbes and Foucault, who believed that the basic principle of society’s existence is based on power, “all against all.” Countering this view, Jones argues for the priority of peace, which is the act of a just society that values the common good.
