In a 2023 lecture at Providence College, Ken Myers explores how the concept of friendship, which used to be central to political philosophy, was banished from considerations of public life as the state was exalted over society. Where it was once regarded as a vital force in creating and sustaining a people who together shared in a broader reality and worked for the common good, friendship in modernity has been privatized and sentimentalized. Myers argues that the recovery of a rich understanding and practice of friendship might aid us in imagining a radically different paradigm for public life.
