In this 2018 lecture, Ken Myers advocates for a recovery of the pre-Enlightenment idea of the intelligibility of music. Music, Myers explains, demonstrates a meaningfulness deeper than language. It was for millennia understood to be analogous to the shape of the cosmos, having power to help us conform ourselves to reality. The idea that musical appreciation is related purely to personal preference would have been nonsensical to most people throughout most of history, Myers says. Music that seeks to reflect and embody both beauty and intelligibility is in harmony with God, who is both Beauty and Logos. Attentive listening to good music is more than a sensual experience; rather, it is one that engages the spirit, emotions, mind, and body. Myers argues that the rewards are worth the effort.
