Jesus said “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32), but today’s maxim in the West is “Everyone must be free to define truth however they desire.” At the Society for Classical Learning conference in 2016, Ken Myers argues that only one of these propositions conforms to reality. When it comes to ordering public life, Christians need to recover a “whole-earth discipleship” that enables them to think Christianly about all areas of life, including public life. They must be ready to challenge intelligently the Enlightenment pre-suppositions that shape public life — which are by no means metaphysically or theologically neutral — rather than accept that faith must be relegated to a privatized sphere. The title of the lecture was “Being Christian in Public: Lessons from St. Paul in Athens.”
