In his book, How to Think: A Survival Guide for a World at Odds, Alan Jacobs argues that “the fundamental problem we have may best be described as an orientation of the will: we suffer from a settled determination to avoid thinking.” Jacobs will be a guest on the soon-to-be-released Volume 142 of our Journal, but meanwhile you can hear another section from that interview in this Friday Feature. Jacobs talks about C. S. Lewis’s two essays, “The Inner Ring” and “Membership” and how they explore the fact that all of our thinking is situated within relationships.
