Robert Royal’s book Columbus and the Crisis of the West offers thoughtful readers an alternative to the ignorant and heated indictment of Christopher Columbus that has become fashionable in recent months. Acknowledging the flaws in the explorer’s character and in the motives of many of his contemporaries, Royal’s book makes no apologies for the desire of Columbus to spread to the New World the Gospel that had been a light to lighten the Gentiles of Europe. Ken Myers talks with Royal about his book and about the current frenzy to condemn figures of the past without knowledge or mercy.
