In a number of articles, philosopher Michael Hanby (author of No God, No Science? Theology, Cosmology, Biology) has argued that understanding the logic of modern politics — and the trajectory that political life has recently followed — requires paying attention to the philosophical assumptions that became dominant with the rise of modern science. “The classical and Christian understanding of freedom as enjoyment of the highest good was no longer available after the seventeenth century, for neither the summum bonum nor the intrinsic teleological ordering of intellect and will could survive the banishment of formal and final causality from the natural order.” Eighteenth-century efforts to prevent liberty from degenerating into license were thus doomed. In this 2016 interview, Hanby explains why the modern pursuit of freedom — obeying its founding logic — has taken such a destructive turn.
