Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials (1995-2000), earned him a reputation as “the anti-C. S. Lewis,” an identity he proudly affirmed. Next week, the BBC and HBO will present the first episode in an eight-part series based on the first book in that trilogy, Northern Lights. From Volume 48 of the Journal, critic Alan Jacobs summarizes the theological and moral vision that Pullman’s books broadcast.
