Rolland Hein has been writing books about novelist George MacDonald for decades. On this Feature, an excerpt from an interview with Hein from 2005 is presented along with a conversation with him from last month. Hein’s latest book is Doors In: The Fairy Tale World of George MacDonald (Cascade Books). What MacDonald does so well, Hein argues, is he employs images that incite readers’ imaginations and speak to the desires hidden within their hearts. Hein explains that MacDonald is a writer of myth functioning rightly, and that such myth affects people a-rationally, stirring something in them much deeper than intellect or emotion alone.
