In anticipation of Christmas, Ken Myers introduces some of the music for the season composed by Michael Praetorius (1571–1621). One of the most significant Protestant composers of his generation, Praetorius known as “the conservator of the chorale” because of his creative marrying of the Lutheran liturgical melodies with techniques from the Italian Renaissance. Among his Christmas music are settings of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (“Lo how a rose e’er blooming”) and In dulci jubilo ( a tune to which is now sung the words “Good Christian men rejoice.”) [The script for this Feature is available here.]
