Presenting trenchant critiques of scientistic reductionism, the books of philosopher Mary Midgley include Evolution as a Religion: Strange Hopes and Stranger Fears (1985), Science as Salvation: A Modern Myth and Its Meaning (1992), and The Ethical Primate: Humans, Freedom and Morality (1996). Midgley died on October 10 at the age of 99. This Friday Feature includes an interview with Midgley from 2001, about her book Science and Poetry (2001), in which she challenges the notion that the work of scientists proceeds in imagination-free zones.
