As today is (in the Western churches) Good Friday, today’s Friday Feature discusses the St. John Passion by J. S. Bach. The guests are Michael Marissen, the author of numerous books about Bach including, Bach and God (discussed on Volume 137) and Marcus Rathey, who discussed his book Bach’s Major Vocal Works: Music, Drama, Liturgy on Volume 135. On Volume 37 of the Journal (released in the spring of 1999), Marissen talked about his book, Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, and Bach’s St. John Passion. Marissen explains how Bach’s setting of the passion narrative makes it clear that all of sinful humanity is responsible for the death of Jesus.
