In the last five years, we’ve been treated to a trilogy of books by Oliver O’Donovan with the series title “Ethics as Theology.” In the first of these, Self, World, and Time, O’Donovan began describing how the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love relate to the task of reflection and deliberation on moral choices. That book was followed by two others: Finding and Seeking, and the final volume Entering into Rest. In this Feature, O’Donovan discusses the “sovereignty of love” in ethical action, and explains the origins of this provocative trilogy of books.
