On Volume 156 of the Journal, Dr. Kimbell Kornu raised the question of how modern medicine understands — or fails to understand — the meaning of suffering. What suffering is and means was also discussed on Volume 25 with Susan Bergman, editor of Martyrs: Contemporary Writers on Modern Lives of Faith. An excerpt from that 1996 conversation is presented in this Feature. Also heard is historian Christopher Shannon, whose 2006 essay “The Politics of Suffering” engaged the work of Ivan Illich, author of Medical Nemesis (1974).
