A Pontifical John Paul II Institute Feature

released 10/6/2023

In a lecture from 2022, Andrew Willard Jones argues that modern political theory typically makes the mistake of regarding all political power as variations of the same thing. In the classical and premodern Christian tradition, the power of just kings and the power of unjust tyrants were recognized as radically different realities. Jones observes that some contemporary Christian political thought has much more in common with Machiavelli than with the premodern tradition.
