In a series of books (including What’s in a Phrase? Pausing Where Scripture Gives You Pause and Word by Word: A Daily Spiritual Practice) Marilyn McEntyre has commended the art of reading thoughtfully, reading with the whole self — mind, heart, and gut. Since for many Christians, Lent is a time of more deliberate reflection and renewal, McEntyre’s latest book offers (in the words of the subtitle) Phrases for the Forty Days of Lent. The phrases presented in Where the Eye Alights are meant as the starting point for reflection. In this Friday Feature, McEntyre talks with Ken Myers about the kind of attentiveness to words that can refresh and enable readers. Also included: thoughts from literary critic Sven Birkerts and novelist Robertson Davies about reading.
