“Our conception of rationality,” writes James Peters, “cannot be separated from our metaphysics — that is, from our understanding of the nature of the world and the human self.” In his 2009 book, The Logic of the Heart: Augustine, Pascal, and the Rationality of Faith, Peters explored an understanding of reason grounded in a Christian metaphysical outlook. In his 2013 book The Catholicity of Reason, D. C. Schindler defended the claim that “a recovery of ‘the whole breadth’ of reason is the only adequate response to the problems of modernity.” In this Friday Feature, Ken Myers presents excerpts from conversations with both of these thinkers (from Volume 97 and Volume 120 of the Journal).
