In Downsizing the U.S.A. (Eerdmans, 1997), economist Thomas Naylor and theologian William Willimon argued that many problems in American society are a function of scale. Our institutions are simply too big to sustain worthy human ends. In the spirit of Leopold Kohr’s The Breakdown of Nations (1957) and E. F. Schumacher’s Small Is Beautiful (1973), Naylor and Willimon argued that “The only way to empower Americans is to make America and all of its giant institutions inordinately smaller.” This Feature presents an interview with Thomas Naylor that was originally heard on Volume 28 of the Mars Hill Tapes.
