Sylvie Vanhoozer, author of The Art of Living in Season: A Year of Reflections for Everyday Saints, introduces listeners to the tradition of the Advent crèche that has been a part of her native Provence, in southern France, for hundreds of years. This tradition involves a community of santons — “little saints” — whose stories have something to teach us about following Christ throughout the entire year, with particular attention to the Church year and the changing seasons. Vanhoozer hopes that the stories in her beautiful book (which includes her own botanical illustrations and drawings of each santon) will offer a compelling view of truth, reality, and the rhythms of life. She discusses the benefits of practices that “enculturate” Christ among a people and root them to their particular place.
