In this Feature, Ken Myers introduces listeners to the Christmas musical compositions of French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (c.1645–1704). His Messe de Minuit pour Noël (“Midnight Mass of the Nativity”), composed in the 1690s, achieves its seasonal flavor by creatively setting the fixed text of the Mass to the tunes of eleven traditional French carols. In this most joyous of masses, Charpentier captures the solemnity, the celebration, and the dramatic mystery of Christ’s birth. He also composed various pastorales, small oratorios that told the story of Christ’s birth in a kind of musical sermon.
