Tom Wolfe (1930-2018) helped launch a movement called the “New Journalism.” Being freed from a “just-the-facts-Ma’am” style of reporting left room for recognizing deeper truths about contemporary events. On occasion, his perceptive eye for the details of various social anxieties caught telling glimpses of cultural shifts that were more than just changes in style. In this archive interview from 2006, Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn offers a summary of those shifts as sensed by Wolfe and diagnosed by Philip Rieff in The Triumph of the Therapeutic.
