In anticipation of this Fall’s Areopagus Lecture entitled “‘For Freedom Set Free’: Retrieving Genuine Religious Liberty,” we present selections from interviews with three Mars Hill Audio guests who have raised questions about the modern understanding of freedom. Thomas de Zengotita (author of Mediated: How the Media Shapes Your World and the Way You Live in It) talks about the sense of “optionality” that permeates the postmodern spirit. William Cavanaugh (Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire) offers some questions inspired by Augustine about the kind of freedom envisioned in “free markets.” And D. C. Schindler (Freedom from Reality: The Diabolical Character of Modern Liberty) invites us to compare modern assumptions of freedom with those that informed classical and pre-modern Christian thinking.
