In his 1966 book, The Triumph of the Therapeutic, Philip Rieff presented a powerful diagnosis of how modernity ushered in a new way of understanding human nature. In 2006, the year Rieff died, a 40th anniversary edition of The Triumph of the Therapeutic was released. That edition featured an introduction by historian Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn, and a critical essay by philosopher Stephen Gardner. In this Feature’s interviews, Stephen Gardner describes on how modern culture has weakened religion and established a new definition of the public. Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn compares the efforts of Tom Wolfe and Philip Rieff to describe the dynamics of cultural disorder.
