Leland Ryken, emeritus professor of English at Wheaton College, talks with Ken Myers about his recent book 40 Favorite Hymns on the Christian Life: A Closer Look at Their Spiritual and Poetic Meaning. Ryken argues for reading hymns as devotional poetry, that we might have constant access to their spiritual insights and that they might help nurture and shape us into disciples. He also discusses how many of the Church’s greatest hymns were born out of great suffering.
