In his latest book, Seven Brief Lessons on Magic, philosopher Paul Tyson observes that “love is but one example of an obvious magical feature of our daily lives that science cannot see. Thought is another example.” So are friendship, justice, dignity, hope, purpose, joy, despair, truth, and goodness. Can we say that such things — imperceptible to science — are real? Ken Myers talks with Tyson about his book, and explains why the word “magic” is in the title, though it’s not a book about casting spells.
