On Volume 149, Christopher Phillips describes the varied roles that hymnals — and meditative reflection on the texts of hymns — have played in building faith. Today’s Feature retrieves an interview from Volume 88 with Darryl Tippens, the author of That’s Why We Sing. Tippens reminds us of Scriptural texts in which a person is moving closer to God when music breaks out (such as Mary’s Magnificat.) He discusses the history of music in the church, and hopes we can turn around the current view of singing within the church.
