Three variously focused interviews with Jean Bethke Elshtain (1941–2013) are presented in this Friday Feature, discussing ideas presented in three of her many books. In Democracy on Trial (Basic Books, 1995), she asked whether democracy could survive deep distrust and cynicism. In Real Politics: At the Center of Everyday Life (John Hopkins University Press, 1997), Elshtain describes lessons learned about the dead end of identity politics from reflecting on the ideas of Vaclav Havel. And in her post-9/11 volume, Just War against Terror: The Burden of American Power in a Violent World (Basic Books, 2003), she reflected on the challenges of using force in the interest of justice.
