Joseph E. Davis
Joseph E. Davis is a Research Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia and Director of the Picturing the Human Project of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture. His research explores the intersecting questions of self, morality, and cultural change, with a focus on medicine and psychiatry. He has recently co-edited special issues of Social Research on “Persons without Qualities: Algorithms, AI, and the Reshaping of Ourselves,” and Culture, Medicine, and Psychiatry on “Being Human in the Age of the Brain: Models of Mind and their Social Effects.” His articles have appeared in professional journals and more popular publications, such as First Things, The New Atlantis, and Aeon/Psyche. Davis writes a monthly Psychology Today blog called “Our New Discontents,” and is working on a new book tentatively titled, The Troubles of Youth.
